Dr Diwakar Sukul hails from Delhi, India. where he was born in 1965. He post-graduates with an MA in clinical Psychology from the University of Delhi and an MBA from the Birla Institute of Management respectively.
He worked with the Delhi Police Foundation for Correction, De-addiction and Rehabilitation and the Jagriti De-Addiction Centre (Association for Social Health in India) where he introduced group psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, and yoga therapy for drug addicts. He also served in Delhi police force as a special police officer.
Dr Sukul arrived in the United kingdom in 1990 for further studies and experience in British psychiatry. He studied for the Diploma in eriksonian Hypnotherapy, Psychotherapy and Neuro-linguistic Programming at St Ann's Hospital in London while working for the Netherne psychiatric and psychogeriatric hospital.
Dr Sukul's doctorate research was titled "Psycho-social correlates of heroin addicts. A cross culture study amongst Indians and White Europeans". It marked the first international comparative study of these two groups living in the East and West.
In 1991 he joined Turning Point Southall Alcohol Advisory Service (SAAS) as Project Manager, where he pioneered an holistic approach using the application of complementary therapies e.g. Hypnotherapy, reflexology, acupuncture, Ayurvedic medicine, Reiki healing and Colour therapy for the treatment of alcohol addiction.
His contribution to the development of complementary medicine has earned him a place in the 'World and Oriental Medicine Congress' in Sri Lanka for M.D. (Alternative Medicine) in 1993 and also an entry into the Dictionary of International Biography, Edition 1995.
His pioneering work is also recognized by the American Biographical Institute. He was nominated for the International book of Honor award of "Who's who of the Year 1995" by the American Biographical Institute. He also received a coveted Diploma in Addictive Behavior from the University of London in 1993.
In his capacity as a Director of Turning Point, he has conducted a series of national and international seminars on complementary medicine, ethnic minority and alcohol and drug related problems and on a unique multi-dimensional health care approach.
He has delivered keynote speeches at a number of international conferences including one on AIDS, drugs and alcohol problems held in New Delhi, on holistic medicine in Annually, France in 1994, an ICCA conference on drug and alcohol abuse in San Deigo 1995, ICCA conference held in Cairo 1997 and ICAA conference in Heidelberg, Germany 2001.
Dr Sukul co-produced and appeared in a video on alcohol related problems in the Asian community. He is the author of three books and has published six research papers. He has contributed a chapter on Complementary therapies for the treatment of Alcohol Dependence in "Alcohol Report" edited by Martin Plant & Douglas Cameron published by free Association Books in London in 2000.
His major field of interest has been addiction, ethnic minorities, therapeutic intervention, education and preventive work on drugs and alcohol management, team building, complementary and integrated healthcare. He has also worked closely with a colleague in India to develop their unique four dimensional approach to holistic healthcare combining the physical, vibrational, energetic and emotional dimensions.
He is also a trainer and consultant of Ethnocon with clients inclusind Narconon, Stoneham Housing Association, Hereford & Worcester Alcohol Project, Signpost, Merton & Sutton Alcohol Project, HARP, TASHA, GRA, Alcohol Concern, Metropolitan Police, St Georges Hospital and several other organizations. He runs the complementary medicine workshop in Durham every year for the Addiction in Forum Conference.
He has appeared on BBC TV, ITV, ZEE TV and several cable television programs talking about holistic medicine.
